Piers - are an important part of the Southport-Oak Island community. Oak Island boasts two ocean piers and a couple additional piers along the Intracoastal Waterway. The City of Southport maintains a pier on the Riverfront, which is known for its flounder fishing. The Oak Island ocean piers are great gathering places for those enjoying the sun and sand but especially for those who like to fish. The Oak Island Pier was built as the Yaupon Pier in 1955, rebuilt in 1972 and again in 1992. The Town of Oak Island purchased the Yaupon Pier in order to save it for future generations and renamed it the Oak Island Pier. The Oak Island Pier is 27 feet above sea level, the tallest pier in North Carolina. The state record tiger shark was caught by Walter Maxwell in 1966 weighing in at 1,150 pounds. The Ocean Crest Pier is the longest fishing pier on the southern Cape Fear Coast and is one of only a few privately owned and operated family fishing piers in North Carolina. A family atmosphere that is known for prize catches of king mackerel and Spanish mackerel. Both piers have restaurants with lounges attached and a full assortment of convenience foods.
